Sierra Nevada Natural Park
The natural park of the Sierra Nevada has the highest peak in continental Spain: the Mulhacén with 3482 metres. The Sierra Nevada was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1986 and it was awarded National Park status in 1999.
The mountain range was formed during the tertiary period and was later covered by glaciers. In medieval times this mountain range was known as the Mountains of the Sun. Here you can stroll through wooded landscapes at mid-mountain level and continue up to the alpine summits to enjoy more barren views. The small picturesque towns of the Alpujarra are located on the southern slopes of these mountainous peaks.
The fauna and flora of this area are noteworthy. 2100 different plant species have been catalogued, of which 65 are unique to the area including mountain poppies, a species of chamomile and of violet. This mountainous area in the heart of Andalucía is also rich in wild life and is home to more than 60 different types of birds. Many different animals live here too, such as the ibex, (which you are bound to spot jumping around the peaks), as well as small moles and weasels.
The cold mountain waters fill the numerous springs, streams and rivers when the snow melts, making the landscape and the towns of the Alpujarra splendidly fertile.
This area is ideal for all kinds of sports, especially for trekking and walking. There are a large number of routes to choose from like the Vereda de la Estrella, the Río Trevélez route or the Capileira-Mulhacén route.

Outside the winter & ski season the national park of the Sierra Nevada is a spacious playground & boundless paradise for outdoor lovers, hikers & bikers. The most southern ski resort in Europe
Sierra Nevada provides one of the widest and most attractive ski domains in southern Europe. The winter season has a 110.4 km ski area distributed in 131 pistes with the biggest vertical drop of Spain. It's only a 45 min drive from Casas Mundo Sol y Luna. You can also go by bus from Granada and Madrid.
We usually ski from late November to late April. The highest slope is 3300m above sea level.
Slopes open from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm and on Thursdays and Saturdays we enjoy Night skiing from 19.00 to 22.00 hours.
Family activities
There is a big kidspark for beginners and 15 ski schools with over 400 teachers.
If you don't ski, you can sledge or enjoy the family area with its roller coaster, magic carpet and slides.
Last but not least a kindergarten will take care of youngest while you ski.

In March 2020 the ski/snowboard cross track hosted the SBX world cup.
